A communication system carries a message from where it is produced to where it is used, so the blocks follow the path of the signal.

(D) Information source — the message starts here (speech, picture, data), so it is the first block.

(A) Transmitter — it converts the message into a signal suitable for sending, so it comes right after the source.

(B) Channel — the wire, cable or free space that carries the signal from the transmitter to the receiver.

(C) Receiver — it picks up the signal at the end of the channel and recovers the message from it.

(E) User of information — the message is finally delivered to the person or device that uses it, so it is the last block.

The sequence is (D), (A), (B), (C), (E).

Elements of a Communication System – “… In a communication system, the transmitter is located at one place, the receiver is located at some other place (far or near) separate from the transmitter and the channel is the physical medium that connects them. … The purpose of the transmitter is to convert the message signal produced by the source of information into a form suitable for transmission through the channel. … The receiver has the task of operating on the received signal. It reconstructs a recognisable form of the original message signal for delivering it to the user of information.”
