Arrange the given structures which are involved in spermatogenesis in correct sequence.
(A) Secondary spermatocyte
(B) Spermatids
(C) Primary spermatocyte
(D) Spermatozoa
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 3
The correct answer is Option (3) → (C), (A), (B), (D)
(C) Primary spermatocyte — first. Some spermatogonia in the seminiferous tubules grow into primary spermatocytes. These are diploid cells with 46 chromosomes, and they undergo meiosis.
(A) Secondary spermatocyte — second. The first meiotic division (reduction division) of one primary spermatocyte gives two equal haploid secondary spermatocytes with 23 chromosomes each.
(B) Spermatids — third. The second meiotic division of the secondary spermatocytes gives four equal haploid spermatids in all.
(D) Spermatozoa — last. The spermatids change shape and become spermatozoa (sperms). This change is called spermiogenesis.

NCERT Extract:
Gametogenesis – “… A primary spermatocyte completes the first meiotic division (reduction division) leading to formation of two equal, haploid cells called secondary spermatocytes, which have only 23 chromosomes each. The secondary spermatocytes undergo the second meiotic division to produce four equal, haploid spermatids (Figure 2.5).”
Gametogenesis – “… The spermatids are transformed into spermatozoa (sperms) by the process called spermiogenesis.”
