Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 1
The correct answer is Option (1) → B, A, C, D
(B) Execution of mutinous sepoys in Peshawar, Illustrated London News — 3 October 1857. The picture shows twelve rebels hanged in a row, with cannons all around them, a public show meant to spread fear.
(A) The Clemency of Canning, Punch — 24 October 1857. This cartoon mocked Governor-General Canning for his call for moderation at a time when the British public wanted revenge.
(C) Rani Jhansi killed in battle — June 1858.
(D) “In Memoriam”, painted by Joseph Noel Paton — painted two years after the mutiny, that is, in 1859. It shows English women and children huddled together, waiting helplessly, and was meant to stir up anger against the rebels.
NCERT (2025-26): “5.2 English women and the honour of Britain … Artists expressed as well as shaped these sentiments through their visual representations of trauma and suffering. ‘In Memoriam’ (Fig. 10.11) was painted by Joseph Noel Paton two years after the mutiny. You can see English women and children huddled in a circle, looking helpless and innocent, seemingly waiting for the inevitable – dishonour, violence and death. ‘In Memoriam’ does not show gory violence; it only suggests it. It stirs up the spectator’s imagination, and seeks to provoke anger and fury. It represents the rebels as violent and brutish, even though they remain invisible in the picture. In the background you can see the British rescue forces arriving as saviours.”
