Glycylalanine is a:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 2
The correct answer is Option (2) → dipeptide
Amino acids join through a peptide bond (–CO–NH–), formed between the –COOH group of one amino acid and the –\( \ce{NH2} \) group of the next, with loss of water. The product is named by the number of amino acid units it contains: two units form a dipeptide, three a tripeptide, four a tetrapeptide, and more than ten a polypeptide.
In the name of a peptide, the amino acids that give up their –COOH group take the ending “-yl”, and the last one keeps its full name. Glycylalanine therefore contains two units: glycine (as glycyl) and alanine.
So glycylalanine is a dipeptide.
