Question:

In a school, ratio of number of boys to that of girls was 6 : 5. In the next year, number of boys increased by 20% and number of girls increased by 10% resulting in an increase of 119 students in the school. How many students were there in the school initially?

Options:

680

750

770

780

Correct Answer:

770

Explanation:

ratio of number of boys to that of girls was 6 : 5

Assume total Students be x

B = 6x/11 and G = 5x/11

New B (20% more) = 1.2* 6x/11 = 7.2x/11

New G (10% more) = 1.1* 5x/11 = 5.5x/11

(7.2x+5.5x)/11  = x + 119

12.7x = 11x+1309

1.7x = 1309

11.7x = 119

x = 770

The correct answer is Option (3) → 770
