Arun and Anuj are partners sharing profits in the ratio of 2:1. Varun was admitted for 1/4 share, half of which was given by Arun and the remaining was contributed by Anuj. Goodwill of the firm is valued at Rs. 40,000. How much of the goodwill will be credited to old partners' capital account?
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 2
The correct answer is Option (2) → Rs. 5,000 each
The new partner's share of goodwill goes to the old partners in the ratio in which they gave up their shares to him, their sacrificing ratio, whatever their old profit sharing ratio is.
Varun's share of goodwill = 40,000 × 1/4 = Rs. 10,000
Half of his 1/4 share came from Arun and half from Anuj, so the sacrificing ratio is 1 : 1
Credited to Arun = 10,000 × 1/2 = Rs. 5,000
Credited to Anuj = 10,000 × 1/2 = Rs. 5,000, that is, Rs. 5,000 each
