Identify the correct statements with reference to water pollution.
(A) The majority of Indian rivers are the victim of cultural pollution.
(B) The concentration of pollutants in rivers remains very low during the summer season when flow of water is low.
(C) Domestic wastes (solid and liquid) cause water pollution.
(D) Leather, textiles and chemicals are major water polluting industries.
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 3
The correct answer is Option (3) → (A), (C) and (D) only
(A) The majority of Indian rivers are the victim of cultural pollution. Correct. Cultural activities such as pilgrimage, religious fairs and tourism also cause water pollution: offerings, bathing and crowds along the banks put waste into the rivers.
(B) The concentration of pollutants in rivers remains very low during the summer season when flow of water is low. Incorrect. In summer there is little water in the rivers to dilute the waste, so the concentration of pollutants remains very high, not low, during that season.
(C) Domestic wastes (solid and liquid) cause water pollution. Correct. Drains carry domestic solid and liquid wastes, along with farm chemicals and industrial effluents, into the rivers.
(D) Leather, textiles and chemicals are major water polluting industries. Correct. Most industrial waste is let into running water or lakes, and the major water polluting industries are leather, pulp and paper, textiles and chemicals.
Note: The current NCERT book (2025-26) says that cultural activities such as pilgrimage, religious fairs and tourism also cause water pollution, but it does not use the term ‘cultural pollution’ or say that the majority of rivers suffer from it. Statement (A) is NTA’s own wording of that point. Since (B) is plainly wrong and Option (3) is the only option without it, the answer is not affected.
NCERT (2025-26): “Prevention of Water Pollution … The drains carrying agricultural (fertilizers and insecticides), domestic (solid and liquid wastes), and industrial effluents join the rivers. The concentration of pollutants in rivers, especially remains very high during the summer season when flow of water is low.… Geographical Perspective on Selected Issues and Problems – Water Pollution: … Most of the industrial wastes are disposed off in running water or lakes. Consequently, poisonous elements reach the reservoirs, rivers and other water bodies, which destroy the bio-system of these waters. Major water polluting industries are leather, pulp and paper, textiles and chemicals. …Cultural activities such as pilgrimage, religious fairs, tourism, etc. also cause water pollution.…” |
