Arrange the given stages of menstrual cycle in correct sequence.
(A) Luteal phase
(B) Follicular phase
(C) Menstruation
(D) Next cycle begins
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 3
The correct answer is Option (3) → (C), (B), (A), (D)
(C) Menstruation — first. The cycle starts with the menstrual phase, when the endometrium breaks down and flows out, lasting 3–5 days.
(B) Follicular phase — second. Under FSH and LH, the follicles grow and the endometrium is rebuilt.
(A) Luteal phase — third. After ovulation, the corpus luteum secretes progesterone to keep the endometrium ready.
(D) Next cycle begins — last. If there is no fertilisation, the corpus luteum degenerates and menstruation starts a new cycle.

NCERT Extract:
Menstrual Cycle – “… The reproductive cycle in the female primates (e.g. monkeys, apes and human beings) is called menstrual cycle. The first menstruation begins at puberty and is called menarche. In human females, menstruation is repeated at an average interval of about 28/29 days, and the cycle of events starting from one menstruation till the next one is called the menstrual cycle. One ovum is released (ovulation) during the middle of each menstrual cycle. The major events of the menstrual cycle are shown in Figure 2.9. The cycle starts with the menstrual phase, when menstrual flow occurs and it lasts for 3-5 days.”
