Question:

MY NOVEMBER GUEST

My Sorrow, when she's here with me,
Thinks these dark days of autumn rain
Are beautiful as days can be;
She loves the bare, the withered tree;
She walks the sodden pasture lane.

Her pleasure will not let me stay.
She talks and I am fain to list:
She's glad the birds are gone away,
She's glad her simple worsted grey
Is silver now with clinging mist.

The desolate, deserted trees,
The faded earth, the heavy sky,
The beauties she so truly sees,
She thinks I have no eye for these,
And vexes me for reason why.

Not yesterday I learned to know
The love of bare November days
Before the coming of the snow,
But it were vain to tell her so,
And they are better for her praise.

The main idea of the poem is that sorrow:

Options:

allows people to appreciate beauty.

makes you cry always.

laments for what has gone.

does not allow people to appreciate beauty.

Correct Answer:

allows people to appreciate beauty.

Explanation:

The correct answer is Option (1) → allows people to appreciate beauty.

The main idea of the poem "My November Guest" is that sorrow allows people to appreciate beauty.

Throughout the poem, the speaker describes how his sorrow, personified as "she," finds beauty in the melancholic aspects of November — the dark days of autumn rain, the bare and withered trees, and the desolate landscape. Despite the speaker's initial reluctance to acknowledge this beauty, the sorrowful perspective ultimately influences him to appreciate the subtle allure of November. This suggests that experiencing sorrow can heighten one's sensitivity to the beauty and intricacies of life, even in seemingly bleak or desolate circumstances. Therefore, the main idea conveyed by the poem is that sorrow, rather than hindering one's ability to appreciate beauty, can actually enhance it.
