A. Infections or diseases which are transmitted through sexual intercourse are collectively called sexually transmitted infections (STI) or venereal diseases (VD) or reproductive tract infections (RTI). Gonorrhoea, syphilis, genital herpes, chlamydiasis, genital warts, trichomoniasis, hepatitis-B and of course, the most discussed infection in the recent years, HIV leading to AIDS are some of the common STIs. Among these, HIV infection is most dangerous. B. An effective and popular method of contraception is the use of Intra Uterine Devices (IUDs). These devices are inserted by doctors or expert nurses in the uterus through the vagina. These Intra Uterine Devices are presently available as the non-medicated IUDs (e.g., Lippes loop), copper-releasing IUDs (CuT, Cu7, Multiload 375) and the hormone-releasing IUDs (Progestasert, LNG-20). C. Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) are medical procedures used to treat infertility by manipulating eggs, sperm, or embryos outside the body. These technologies aim to help individuals or couples achieve pregnancy when natural conception is difficult. Some examples of ART include: In vitro fertilisation (IVF–fertilisation outside the body in almost similar conditions as that in the body) followed by embryo transfer (ET) is one of such methods. In this method, popularly known as test tube baby programme, ova from the wife/donor (female) and sperms from the husband/donor (male) are collected and are induced to form zygote under simulated conditions in the laboratory. D. Amniocentesis is a medical procedure used to determine any hereditary disorders in the embryo. During amniocentesis, a small amount of amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus in the womb is sampled and analyzed. This fluid contains cells shed by the fetus, and their genetic material can be examined for chromosomal abnormalities, genetic disorders, and other conditions. It is a valuable prenatal diagnostic tool for identifying various hereditary disorders, such as Down syndrome, cystic fibrosis, and neural tube defects. |
