The speed of a boat in still water is 5 km/h. If it can travel 26 km downstream and 14 km upstream in the same time, then the speed of the stream is

Options:

1.5 km/h

2 km/h

2.5 km/h

Correct Answer:

1.5 km/h

Explanation:

Let the speed of the stream be x km/hour.

Then speed of the boat in downstream will be (26+x)km/hour.

And speed of the boat in upstream will be (26−x)km/hour.

As given,the boat travels 26km downstream and 14km upstream at the same time.

= \(\frac{26}{5+x }\) = \(\frac{14}{5-x }\) 

= 26(5−x) = 14(5+x)

= 130−26x = 70+14x

= 60 = 40x

x = 1.5km/hour
