Dr Homi Jehangir Bhabha, the father of India’s nuclear programme, led the building of Apsara, India’s first nuclear reactor and the first in Asia. Bhabha also founded the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (1945) and the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay, renamed the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre after his death in 1966.
