Dalai Lama sought asylum in India in 1959, much to the protest of the Chinese government. Following the India-China war in 1962, K. Krishna Menon chose to resign from his position as the Defence Minister of India. In an effort to counterbalance the alliance between the US, Pakistan, and China during the Indo-Pak War of 1971, India established a 20-year Treaty of Peace and Friendship with the Soviet Union in August 1971. This pact assured India of Soviet backing in case of any hostile threats. The process of normalizing relations between India and China spanned over a decade. The year 1976 marked the restoration of full diplomatic ties between these two nations. |
