The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is a major regional initiative by the South Asian states to evolve cooperation through multilateral means. It began in 1985. The first Summit of SAARC was held in Dhaka. Members of SAARC- Maldives, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan (In 2007 Afghanistan joins SAARC.), India and Nepal.

The South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) is an agreement among the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) member countries to promote regional trade and economic cooperation.
The SAFTA Agreement was signed in 2004 and came into effect on 1 January 2006. SAFTA aims at lowering trade tariffs.
