In which of the following states is the migration of rural females due to marriage the lowest?
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 2
The correct answer is Option (2) → Meghalaya
Marriage is the most important cause of female migration in the rural areas of India. Meghalaya is the only exception, where the reverse is the case.
Note 1: This question is taken from the pre-rationalised NCERT book. The latest edition (2026-27) does not have this part. An extract of the pre-rationalised NCERT book is given below for the benefit of students.
Note 2: The given answer is as per the official NTA Answer Key. The book does not say in clear words that marriage migration of rural females is the lowest in Meghalaya. It only says that marriage is the most important cause in the rural areas of India except in Meghalaya, where the reverse is the case, which shows that marriage is the least important cause of rural female migration there.
Pre-rationalised NCERT: “On the basis of the figures, it can be seen that reason for migration of males and females are different. For example, work and employment have remained the main cause for male migration (26 per cent) while it is only 2.3 per cent for the females. Contrary to this, about 67 per cent of females move out from their parental houses following their marriage. This is the most important cause in the rural areas of India except in Meghalaya where reverse is the case.” |
