Which of the following statements related to state reorganisation are correct?
A. The Vishalandhra movement demanded separation of the Telugu-speaking areas from the Madras Province of which they were a part.
B. A separate Andhra state was formed in December 1952.
C. The States Reorganisation Commission was appointed in 1953.
D. The States Reorganisation Act led to the creation of 19 states and 6 union territories.
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 1
The correct answer is Option (1) → A, B and C only
Note: The given answer is as per the official NTA Answer Key. However, there seems to be a mistake in statement B. In December 1952 the Prime Minister only announced the formation of a separate Andhra state; the question says the state was formed then. The book gives no date for the actual formation; the separate Andhra state came into being on 1 October 1953. Read strictly, only A and C are correct and no option fits; B is taken as correct in the sense of the announcement, which makes Option (1) the answer, as explained below.
A. The Vishalandhra movement demanded separation of the Telugu-speaking areas from the Madras Province of which they were a part. Correct.
B. A separate Andhra state was formed in December 1952. Correct (as per NTA). After Potti Sriramulu’s death and the protests that followed, the formation of a separate Andhra state was announced in December 1952.
C. The States Reorganisation Commission was appointed in 1953. Correct.
D. The States Reorganisation Act led to the creation of 19 states and 6 union territories. Incorrect. The Act of 1956 created 14 states and six union territories.
NCERT (2025-26): “Reorganisation of States … This decision of the national leadership was challenged by the local leaders and the people. Protests began in the Telugu speaking areas of the old Madras province, which included present day Tamil Nadu, parts of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka. The Vishalandhra movement (as the movement for a separate Andhra was called) demanded that the Telugu speaking areas should be separated from the Madras province of which they were a part and be made into a separate Andhra province. Nearly all the political forces in the Andhra region were in favour of linguistic reorganisation of the then Madras province. Reorganisation of States … Finally, the Prime Minister announced the formation of a separate Andhra state in December 1952. Reorganisation of States … The formation of Andhra spurred the struggle for making of other states on linguistic lines in other parts of the country. These struggles forced the Central Government into appointing a States Reorganisation Commission in 1953 to look into the question of redrawing of the boundaries of states. The Commission in its report accepted that the boundaries of the state should reflect the boundaries of different languages. On the basis of its report the States Reorganisation Act was passed in 1956. This led to the creation of 14 states and six union territories.” |
