Question:

Select the correct statement/s from the following:

A. Spermatogonia always undergo meiotic cell division.

B. Primary spermatocytes divide by mitotic cell division.

C. Secondary spermatocytes have 23 chromosomes and undergo second meiotic division

D. Spermatozoa are transformed into spermatids.

Choose the correct answer from the options given below:

Options:

A and C only

C only

D only

B and C only

Correct Answer:

C only

Explanation:

The correct answer is Option (2) -C only

Spermatogenesis is the process of formation of sperms in the seminiferous tubules. The inside of the seminiferous tubules are lined with diploid male germ cells known as the spermatogonia which have 46 chromosomes.

Majority of these cells divide by mitotic division and increase their number. Some of these diploid spermatogonia, known as the primary spermatocytes, undergo first meiotic division.

Each diploid primary spermatocyte divides to form two haploid secondary spermatocytes having 23 chromosomes each.

Both haploid secondary spermatocytes undergo second meiotic division and finally form four haploid spermatids, each of which carry 23 chromosomes.

Spermiogenesis: During the process of spermiogenesis, the spermatids undergo transformation within the seminiferous tubules to form spermatozoa or sperms.
