Question:

The total population of a town is 50,000. The number of males and females increases by 10% and 15% respectively and consequently the population of the town becomes 56,000. What was the number of males in the town?

Options:

20,000

30,000

35,000

40,000

Correct Answer:

30,000

Explanation:

Total Population "P" = 50000

M+F = 50000 ........(1)

if Males increased by 10% and females increased by 15%

1.1M + 1.15F = 56000 ........(2)

Multiply (1) by 1.1,

1.1M + 1.1F = 55000

From (1) and (2)

0.05F = 1000

F = 20000

M = 50000-20000 = 30000

The correct answer is Option (2) → 30,000
