How did the cause of conflict come into existence? In psychodynamic therapy, the causes of psychological problems are believed to originate from unfulfilled childhood desires and unresolved fears. These unmet desires and fears create intrapsychic conflicts within the individual. In behavior therapy, the causes of psychological problems are attributed to faulty conditioning patterns, erroneous learning experiences, and distorted thinking and beliefs. Maladaptive behaviors are learned through these faulty processes, which ultimately contribute to psychological difficulties. Existential therapy focuses on the present and emphasizes that psychological problems stem from current experiences such as feelings of loneliness, alienation, and a sense of futility in one's existence. According to this perspective, the existential challenges faced in the present moment are what give rise to psychological distress. |
