Time, Speed and Distance

Question:

A car travels a distance of 60 km at uniform speed. If the speed of car is increased by 8 km/hr, then it takes 2 hour less to cover the same distance. What is the original speed of the car?

Options:

12 km/hr

16 km/hr

10 km/hr

15 km/hr

Correct Answer:

12 km/hr

Explanation:

Let speed = S km/hr

Distance = 60 km

Time taken = \(\frac{60}{S}\) hours

Now , Increased speed = (S + 8) km/hr

Distance = 60 km

Time taken = \(\frac{60}{(S+8)}\) hours

\(\frac{60}{S}\) - \(\frac{60}{(S+8)}\) = 2

on solving ,

S = 12 km/hr

So speed of car is 12 km/hr
