Statement 1: The principle of reciprocal inhibition is fundamental to vicarious learning.

Statement 2: Vicarious Learning is learning by observing others.

Options:

Only Statement 1 is correct.

Both statements are correct.

None of the given statement is correct.

Correct Answer:

Only Statement 2 is correct.

Explanation:

The principle of reciprocal inhibition is fundamental to systematic desensitization. According to this principle, the presence of two opposing forces simultaneously inhibits the weaker force. In this therapy, the relaxation response acts as the opposing force to anxiety. By building up relaxation and pairing it with mildly anxiety-provoking scenes, the anxiety is gradually overcome. As the client remains in a relaxed state, they become more capable of tolerating increasingly higher levels of anxiety.

Vicarious learning, i.e. learning by observing others, is used and through a process of rewarding small changes in the behaviour, the client gradually learns to acquire the behaviour of the model.
