Anu and Shipra are partners in a firm sharing profits in the ratio of 3:2. They admit Kriti as a new partner. Anu sacrificed 1/4 of her share and Shipra 1/3 of her share in favour of Kriti. Calculate the new profit sharing ratio of Anu, Shipra and Kriti.
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 2
The correct answer is Option (2) → 27:16:17
Each old partner gives up a fraction of her own share, not a fraction of the whole profit. Kriti’s share is the total of what the two of them give up.
Anu (old share 3/5):
Sacrifice = 1/4 × 3/5 = 3/20
New share = 3/5 − 3/20 = 9/20
Shipra (old share 2/5):
Sacrifice = 1/3 × 2/5 = 2/15
New share = 2/5 − 2/15 = 4/15
Kriti and the ratio:
Kriti’s share = 3/20 + 2/15 = 17/60
On a common denominator of 60: Anu 27/60, Shipra 16/60, Kriti 17/60
New profit sharing ratio = 27:16:17
“Sacrificed 1/4 of her share” means 1/4 × 3/5. Reading it as a flat 1/4 of the firm’s profit is the slip that leads to the wrong ratios.
