Arrange the following events of menstrual cycle in correct sequence.
(A) Proliferative phase
(B) Menstruation
(C) Secretory phase
(D) Ovulatory phase
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 3
The correct answer is Option (3) → (B), (A), (D), (C)
(B) Menstruation — first. The cycle begins with the menstrual phase. It lasts 3–5 days. The endometrium of the uterus breaks down and flows out with blood, because the released ovum was not fertilised.
(A) Proliferative phase — second. This is the follicular phase. The primary follicles grow into a mature Graafian follicle, and at the same time the endometrium regenerates by proliferation under the effect of estrogens.
(D) Ovulatory phase — third. Around the middle of the cycle (about the 14th day), the LH surge makes the Graafian follicle burst and release the ovum.
(C) Secretory phase — last. This is the luteal phase. The empty follicle becomes the corpus luteum, which secretes progesterone. Progesterone keeps the endometrium ready for implantation. If no fertilisation takes place, the corpus luteum breaks down and the next menstruation begins.

NCERT Extract:
Menstrual Cycle – “… The cycle starts with the menstrual phase, when menstrual flow occurs and it lasts for 3-5 days.”
Menstrual Cycle – “… The menstrual phase is followed by the follicular phase. During this phase, the primary follicles in the ovary grow to become a fully mature Graafian follicle and simultaneously the endometrium of uterus regenerates through proliferation.”
Menstrual Cycle – “… The ovulation (ovulatory phase) is followed by the luteal phase during which the remaining parts of the Graafian follicle transform as the corpus luteum (Figure 2.9).”
