(iv) Bulbourethral gland

Options:

(i) and (ii)

(i), (ii) and (iv)

(ii), (iii) and (iv)

(i) and (iv)

Correct Answer:

(i), (ii) and (iv)

Explanation:

The correct answer is Option (2) –(i), (ii) and (iv)

The male reproductive system is located in the pelvis region . It includes a pair of testes along with accessory ducts, glands and the external genitalia . The male sex accessory ducts include rete testis, vasa efferentia, epididymis and vas deferens . The seminiferous tubules of the testis open into the vasa efferentia through rete testis. The vasa efferentia leave the testis and open into epididymis located along the posterior surface of each testis. The epididymis leads to vas deferens that ascends to the abdomen and loops over the urinary bladder. It receives a duct from seminal vesicle and opens into urethra as the ejaculatory duct . These ducts store and transport the sperms from the testis to the outside through urethra. The urethra originates from the urinary bladder and extends through the penis to its external opening called urethral meatus.

The male accessory glands consist of the seminal vesicles, prostate gland, and bulbourethral glands. These glands produce fluids that combine to form seminal plasma, a component of semen. Here’s a brief breakdown of their roles:

  1. Seminal vesicles: These paired glands secrete a fluid rich in fructose, which provides energy for sperm. Their secretion also contains enzymes and other substances that help nourish and support sperm viability.
  2. Prostate gland: The prostate adds secretions that contain calcium and enzymes. These substances help in sperm activation and enhance sperm motility.
  3. Bulbourethral glands: These paired glands secrete a clear, lubricating fluid that neutralizes any acidic residue in the urethra, making the passage smoother for sperm during ejaculation.

Together, the secretions of these glands contribute to semen, which supports, nourishes, and transports sperm, aiding in successful fertilization.
