He served as the Indian High Commissioner to Ceylon (Sri Lanka), the Labor Minister in the Union cabinet. He held the post of Governor in Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Mysore (Karnataka). Giri's trajectory also included being Vice-President (1967-1969) and acting President following President Zakir Hussain's passing in 1969.
