Net Zero is the target of bringing a country’s or a company’s greenhouse gas emissions (carbon dioxide, methane and others) down to zero on balance. Emissions are cut as far as possible, and whatever is still released is balanced by gas taken out of the air, by forests or by carbon-capture technology. The word ‘net’ means emitted minus removed equals zero.
The aim is to stop global warming; India has set 2070 as its Net Zero year, announced at the COP26 climate summit at Glasgow in 2021.
