Question:

Given that the events A and B are such that P(A) = 1/2, P(A∪B) = 3/5 and P(B) = p. Find the value of 'p' if they are independent.

Options:

1/10

1/5

1/15

1/20

Correct Answer:

1/5

Explanation:

It is given that P(A) = 1/2, P(A∪B) = 3/5 and P(B) = p

When A and B are independent P(A∩B) = P(A). P(B) = (1/2). p

It is known that, P(A∪B) = P(A) +P(B) - P(A∩B)

⇒  3/5 = 1/2 +p - (1/2)p

⇒ p = 1/5
