Question:

A few boys and a few girls appeared for a test. The average score of the boys was 52, the average score of the girls was 72, while the combined average was 60. What was the ratio of the number of boys to the number of girls who took the test?

Options:

3 : 2

13 : 18

18 : 13

2 : 3

Correct Answer:

3 : 2

Explanation:

Average of Boys = \(\frac{Boys}{No. of Boys}\) = 52,

⇒ Boys = 52 x No. of Boys     ..(1.)

Average of Girls = \(\frac{Girls}{No. of Girls}\) = 72,

⇒ Girls = 72 x No. of Girls     ..(2.)

Combined Average = \(\frac{Boys + Girls}{No. of Boys + No. of Girls}\) = 60,

⇒ Putting (1.) and (2.) here,

⇒  52 x No. of Boys + 72 x No. of Girls = 60 x No. of Boys + 60 x No. of Girls

⇒ 8 x No. of Boys = 12 x No. of Girls

⇒ No. of Boys : No. of Girls = 12 : 8 = 3 : 2.
