Match List I with List - II.
| List – I (Electronic Device) | List – II (Application) | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| (A) | Zener diode | (I) | Rectifier |
| (B) | Capacitor | (II) | Amplifier |
| (C) | Transistor | (III) | Voltage regulator |
| (D) | p-n junction diode | (IV) | Filter circuit |
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 3
The correct answer is Option (3) → (A)-(III), (B)-(IV), (C)-(II), (D)-(I)
Each device is matched with the job that follows from how it behaves in a circuit.
(A) Zener diode — this matches (III) Voltage regulator. In reverse breakdown the voltage across a Zener diode stays almost constant over a wide range of current, which holds the output voltage steady.
(B) Capacitor — this matches (IV) Filter circuit. Connected across the load of a rectifier, it charges at the peaks and discharges in between, smoothing out the ripples.
(C) Transistor — this matches (II) Amplifier. A small change in the base current produces a much larger change in the collector current.
(D) p-n junction diode — this matches (I) Rectifier. It conducts in forward bias and not in reverse bias, so it converts a.c. into d.c.
Note: Items (B) Capacitor and (D) p-n junction diode of this question are from the latest textbook (2026-27). Items (A) Zener diode and (C) Transistor are printed only in the pre-rationalised textbook (2022-23). They were removed from the latest book, and they also appear to be out of the CUET 2026 syllabus.
NCERT (2026-27):
Application of Junction Diode as a Rectifier – “… This property is used to rectify alternating voltages and the circuit used for this purpose is called a rectifier.”
Application of Junction Diode as a Rectifier – “… To get steady dc output from the pulsating voltage normally a capacitor is connected across the output terminals (parallel to the load RL). … Since these additional circuits appear to filter out the ac ripple and give a pure dc voltage, so they are called filters.”
NCERT (Pre-rationalised edition, 2022-23):
Zener Diode – “… It is designed to operate under reverse bias in the breakdown region and used as a voltage regulator.”
Transistor: Structure and Action – “… Basically, it was invented to function as an amplifier, a device which produces a enlarged copy of a signal.”
