Reason: The ampulla is a part of the fallopian tube where fertilization often occurs, and it is the only site of fertilization.

Options:

Assertion is true but reason is false.

Assertion and reason both are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

Both the assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion .

Assertion is false but the reason is true.

Correct Answer:

Assertion is true but reason is false.

Explanation:

During copulation (coitus) semen is released by the penis into the vagina (insemination). The motile sperms swim rapidly, pass through the cervix, enter into the uterus and finally reach the ampullary region of the fallopian tube . The ovum released by the ovary is also transported to the ampullary region where fertilisation takes place. The ampulla is a part of the fallopian tube where fertilization often occurs, but it is not the only site of fertilization. Fertilization can occur anywhere along the length of the fallopian tube. Fertilisation can only occur if the ovum and sperms are transported simultaneously to the ampullary region. This is the reason why not all copulations lead to fertilisation and pregnancy.
