Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by marked difficulties in social interaction and communication, restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, and activities. Children with ASD may have difficulty understanding social cues, initiating and maintaining conversations, and engaging in imaginative play. They may also have restricted interests and behaviors, and may become upset by changes in routine. Alogia, impulsivity, and hyperactivity are not specifically associated with ASD. Alogia is a lack of speech or a tendency to speak in a vague or incoherent manner. Impulsivity is a tendency to act without thinking or considering the consequences. Hyperactivity is a state of excessive physical movement or restlessness. While children with ASD may sometimes exhibit these behaviors, they are not defining features of the disorder. |
