In an election between two candidates, one of the candidates secured 35% of the votes cast and was defeated by the other candidate by 1296 votes. If there were no invalid votes, then the total number of votes polled was:

Let Total number of votes = 100x

Votes of Looser candidate = 35% of 100x  = 35x

Votes of winner candidate = ( 100x - 35x) = 65x

According to Question ,

65x - 35x = 30x

30x = 1296

x = \(\frac{1296}{30}\) = 43.2

100x = 4320

So , Total number of Votes = 100 × 43.2 = 4320
