Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 4
The correct answer is Option (4) → Sacred groves
In ex situ conservation, threatened plants and animals are taken out of their natural habitat and kept in a special setting. In in situ conservation, they are protected in their natural habitat.
(1) Zoological parks — A method of ex situ conservation. Threatened animals are kept and cared for outside their habitat.
(2) Tissue culture propagation — A method of ex situ conservation. Plants are grown from cells or tissues in the laboratory.
(3) Cryopreservation of gametes — A method of ex situ conservation. The gametes of threatened species are stored at very low temperature and can be used later for fertilisation.
(4) Sacred groves — Not a method of ex situ conservation. These are tracts of forest that were set aside by religious and cultural traditions. The trees and wildlife are protected where they live, so this is an in situ method.
