Which one of the following contraceptives is a hormone releasing IUD?
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 2
The correct answer is Option (2) → LNG-20
Intra Uterine Devices (IUDs) are placed in the uterus by a doctor or expert nurse. They are of three kinds: non-medicated, copper releasing and hormone releasing.
(1) Lippes loop — Incorrect. This is a non-medicated IUD. It carries no copper or hormone.
(2) LNG-20 — Correct. This is a hormone releasing IUD (Progestasert is the other example). It also makes the uterus unsuitable for implantation and the cervix hostile to sperms.
(3) Multiload 375 — Incorrect. This is a copper releasing IUD (like CuT and Cu7). The copper ions released stop the sperms from moving and reduce their power to fertilise.
(4) Diaphragms — Incorrect. This is a barrier method. It is a rubber cap that covers the cervix. It is not an IUD.
