| (C) | Brilliance of diamond | (III) | Diffraction |
| (D) | Rainbow | (IV) | Photoelectric effect |
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 4
The correct answer is Option (4) → (A) - (III), (B) - (IV), (C) - (II), (D) - (I)
Each phenomenon is the standard evidence for, or the cause of, the item it is matched with.
(A) Wave nature of light — this matches (III) Diffraction. The bending of light around small obstacles and apertures can be explained only by waves.
(B) Particle nature of light — this matches (IV) Photoelectric effect. Instant emission and a threshold frequency can be explained only if light comes in photons of energy \( h\nu \).
(C) Brilliance of diamond — this matches (II) Total internal reflection. Diamond has a very small critical angle (about \( 24^{\circ} \)), so light entering it is reflected internally many times before it leaves.
(D) Rainbow — this matches (I) Dispersion of light. Water drops split sunlight into its colours by dispersion, together with refraction and internal reflection inside the drop.
Note: Items (A), (B) and (C) of this question are from the latest textbook (2026-27). Item (D), that the rainbow is caused by the dispersion of sunlight, is printed only in the pre-rationalised textbook (2022-23). It was removed from the latest book, and it also appears to be out of the CUET 2026 syllabus.
NCERT (2026-27):
Photoelectric Effect and Wave Theory of Light – “… The phenomena of interference, diffraction and polarisation were explained in a natural and satisfactory way by the wave picture of light.”
Particle Nature of Light: The Photon – “Photoelectric effect thus gave evidence to the strange fact that light in interaction with matter behaved as if it was made of quanta or packets of energy, each of energy hν.”
Summary – “… Multiple internal reflections in diamond (\( i_c \cong 24.4^\circ \)), totally reflecting prisms and mirage, are some examples of total internal reflection.”
NCERT (Pre-rationalised edition, 2022-23):
The Rainbow – “The rainbow is an example of the dispersion of sunlight by the water drops in the atmosphere.”
