Reading Comprehension
Three friends, Rajat, Raman, and Ansh, after completing their studies from a reputed business school in Delhi, were discussing the organisation they should be joining. Rajat was very clear about his future. He would like to take a job in the government sector as it gives him stability in his future income and the kind of work which will help him to work with greater zeal. It will also provide him with many post retirement benefits when he retires from his service. Raman wants to work with a company which has an appropriate and clear development plan for its employees and helps the employees to grow to higher levels in the organisation. In addition to this, the company should also provide facilities like free housing, free medical aid etc. Ansh said that he would prefer to work with an organisation, which has a culture of individual autonomy that is considered by employees and provides employees with the opportunity for personal growth and meaningful work experience.
All of them have different set of expectations and needs of joining an organisation.
“Raman wants to work with a company which has an appropriate and clear development plan for its employees and helps the employees to grow to higher levels in the organisation. In addition to this, the company should also provide facilities like free housing, free medical aid etc.”
Which of the following incentive is being prioritised by Raman for taking up the job?
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 4
The correct answer is Option (4) → Career advancement opportunity
Option (1) Organisational Climate — Incorrect. Organisational climate is the set of features that describe an organisation, such as individual autonomy and consideration for employees. That is closer to what Ansh wants.
Option (2) Job enrichment — Incorrect. Job enrichment makes the work itself more interesting and challenging. Raman speaks about rising to higher levels, not about the content of the job.
Option (3) Employee Participation — Incorrect. Employee participation means involving employees in decisions, for example through work committees or suggestion schemes. Raman does not mention this.
Option (4) Career advancement opportunity — Correct. Employees are motivated when they have a chance to grow to higher positions. A clear development plan for employees and a sound promotion policy provide this. Raman wants a company that helps its employees grow to higher levels. The free housing and free medical aid he also wants are perquisites, a financial incentive, which is not among the options.
NCERT (2026-27 Edition): “Non-Financial Incentives: … (iii) Career Advancement Opportunity: Every individual wants to grow to the higher level in the organisation. Managers should provide opportunity to employees to improve their skills and be promoted to the higher level jobs. Appropriate skill development programmes, and sound promotion policy will help employees to achieve promotions. …” “Financial Incentives: … (vii) Perquisites: In many companies perquisites and fringe benefits are offered such as car allowance, housing, medical aid, and education to the children, etc., over and above the salary. …” |
