Identify the correct sequence of events during the menstrual cycle.
(A) Proliferative phase
(B) Ovulatory phase
(C) Menstrual phase
(D) Luteal phase
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 4
The correct answer is Option (4) → (C), (A), (B), (D)
(C) Menstrual phase — first. The cycle starts with menstruation (days 3-5). The lining of the uterus (endometrium) and its blood vessels break down and flow out.
(A) Proliferative phase — second. This is the follicular phase. Under FSH and LH the follicles grow, and the estrogen they release makes the endometrium grow back (proliferate).
(B) Ovulatory phase — third. In the middle of the cycle (about day 14) the LH surge makes the Graafian follicle burst and release the ovum.
(D) Luteal phase — last. The empty follicle becomes the corpus luteum. It secretes progesterone, which keeps the endometrium ready for implantation. If there is no fertilisation, it breaks down and a new cycle begins.

NCERT Extract:
Menstrual Cycle – “… The cycle starts with the menstrual phase, when menstrual flow occurs and it lasts for 3-5 days.”
Menstrual Cycle – “… The menstrual phase is followed by the follicular phase. During this phase, the primary follicles in the ovary grow to become a fully mature Graafian follicle and simultaneously the endometrium of uterus regenerates through proliferation.”
Menstrual Cycle – “… Rapid secretion of LH leading to its maximum level during the mid-cycle called LH surge induces rupture of Graafian follicle and thereby the release of ovum (ovulation). The ovulation (ovulatory phase) is followed by the luteal phase during which the remaining parts of the Graafian follicle transform as the corpus luteum (Figure 2.9).”
