Abhay and Sumant are partners sharing profit in the ratio of 2:1. Aakriti was admitted for 1/4 share, half of which was given by Abhay and the remaining was contributed by Sumant. The goodwill of the firm is valued at Rs. 40,000. How much of the goodwill will be credited to the old partner's capital account?
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 2
The correct answer is Option (2) → Rs. 5,000 each
The new partner pays for the goodwill share he takes, and each old partner is credited with the part he gave up (sacrificed).
Aakriti’s share = 1/4; half of it (1/8) comes from Abhay and the other half (1/8) from Sumant.
Sacrificing ratio of Abhay and Sumant = 1/8 : 1/8 = 1 : 1
Aakriti’s share of goodwill = Rs. 40,000 × 1/4 = Rs. 10,000
Credited to each old partner = Rs. 10,000 × 1/2 = Rs. 5,000 each
The old ratio of 2:1 is not used here, because goodwill is shared in the sacrificing ratio, and the two partners gave up equal shares.
