Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 2
The correct answer is Option (2) → A - II, B - III, C - IV, D - I
(A) National Front (1989-1990) — this matches (II) Supported by Left Front and BJP.
(B) NDA (1999-2004) — this matches (III) Led by BJP.
(C) United Front (1997-1998) — this matches (IV) Supported by Congress Party.
(D) Congress (1991-1996) — this matches (I) Supported by AIADMK and some smaller parties, by elimination.
Note: NCERT (2025-26) says that the Congress emerged as the single largest party in 1991 and Narsimha Rao became Prime Minister, but it does not name the parties that supported this government. Item (D) is therefore matched by elimination: (A), (B) and (C) settle (II), (III) and (IV), which leaves (I).
NCERT (2025-26): “Era of Coalitions … In the elections of 1991, Congress emerged as the single largest party. Following Rajiv Gandhi’s death, the party chose Narsimha Rao as the Prime Minister. … … The National Front (which itself was an alliance of Janata Dal and some other regional parties) received support from two diametrically opposite political groups: the BJP and the Left Front. … … These parties played an important role in the United Front government that came to power in 1996. The United Front was similar to the National Front of 1989 for it included Janata Dal and several regional parties. This time the BJP did not support the government. The United Front government was supported by the Congress. … … But most other parties were opposed to its policies and therefore, the BJP government could not secure a majority in the Lok Sabha. It finally came to power by leading a coalition government from May 1998 to June 1999 and was re-elected in October 1999. Atal Behari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister during both these NDA governments and his government formed in 1999 completed its full term.” |
