| D. | Pakistan’s army arrested Sheikh Mujib and unleashed a reign of terror on East Pakistan | IV. | 1956 |
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 1
The correct answer is Option (1) → A – III, B – IV, C – II, D – I
(A) The first Summit of NAM — this matches (III) 1961. The summit was held in Belgrade.
(B) Britain attacked Egypt over the Suez Canal issue — this matches (IV) 1956.
(C) Atal Behari Vajpayee (then External Affairs Minister) visited China — this matches (II) 1979.
(D) Pakistan’s army arrested Sheikh Mujib and unleashed a reign of terror on East Pakistan — this matches (I) 1971.
Note 1: The original NTA paper printed Option (2) as ‘A - III, D - I, B - IV, C - II’. It is the same matching as Option (1), written in a different order, so it was also correct, and NTA accepted both Option (1) and Option (2) in its final answer key. So that the question has one answer, Option (2) has been changed to ‘A - III, B - II, C - IV, D - I’.
Note 2: It seems that there is a mistake in the original NTA paper, which heads List-I ‘Country’ and List-II ‘Events /Treaty’, when List-I gives the events and List-II the years.
NCERT (2025-26): “Afro-Asian unity … The Bandung Conference later led to the establishment of the NAM. The First Summit of the NAM was held in Belgrade in September 1961. Nehru was a co-founder of the NAM. Distance from two camps … This was a difficult balancing act and sometimes the balance did not appear perfect. In 1956 when Britain attacked Egypt over the Suez Canal issue, India led the world protest against this neo-colonial invasion.… Bangladesh war, 1971 … Instead, in early 1971, the Pakistani army arrested Sheikh Mujib and unleashed a reign of terror on the people of East Pakistan.…”
