B. China is fast emerging as a great power

D. The economies of Asia are witnessing slow growth
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 1
The correct answer is Option (1) → A, B and C only
The UN was set up in 1945, and the way it was organised reflected the realities of world politics after the Second World War. After the Cold War those realities changed, and these changes are the reason behind the demands to reform the UN.
A. The relation between Russia and the US is much more cooperative Correct. During the Cold War the US and the Soviet Union were the two rival superpowers at the head of opposite blocs. After the Soviet Union collapsed, the relationship between Russia, its successor, and the US became much more cooperative.
B. China is fast emerging as a great power Correct. Along with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the US becoming the strongest power, China is fast emerging as a great power, and India too is growing rapidly. The UN’s set-up, made in 1945, does not reflect this new balance, which is one of the complaints behind the call for its reform.
C. A whole new set of challenges are confronting the world Correct. These challenges include genocide, civil war, ethnic conflict, terrorism, nuclear proliferation, climate change, environmental degradation and epidemics. Facing them, the question as the Cold War ended was whether the UN was doing enough and was equipped to do what is required.
D. The economies of Asia are witnessing slow growth Incorrect. The opposite is true: the economies of Asia are growing at an unprecedented rate. ‘Slow growth’ reverses this point, so D is the only statement that is not correct.
Note: The original NTA paper printed the question as “Which of the following statements are not correct regarding the changes those have occurred in the world after the Cold War?” As printed, it could not be answered: statements A, B and C are correct and only D is not correct, no option gives D alone, and the answer given by NTA, Option (1), is the set of correct statements. We have therefore removed the word ‘not’ from the question, so that it matches the answer given by NTA.
NCERT (2025-26): “Reform of the UN after the Cold War … The UN was established in 1945 immediately after the Second World War. The way it was organised and the way it functioned reflected the realities of world politics after the Second World War. After the Cold War, those realities are different. Here are some of the changes that have occurred:”
