Arrange the given events of menstrual cycle in correct sequence.
A. Ovulatory phase
B. Follicular phase
C. Luteal phase
D. Menstrual phase
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 4
The correct answer is Option (4) → D, B, A, C
(D) Menstrual phase — comes first. The cycle starts with menstruation, which lasts for 3–5 days. The lining of the uterus and its blood vessels break down and come out through the vagina, because the released ovum was not fertilised.
(B) Follicular phase — comes second. Primary follicles in the ovary grow into a mature Graafian follicle, and the endometrium of the uterus builds up again. FSH and LH rise gradually, and the growing follicles secrete estrogens.
(A) Ovulatory phase — comes third. In the middle of the cycle (about the 14th day), a surge of LH makes the Graafian follicle rupture and release the ovum.
(C) Luteal phase — comes last. The ruptured follicle turns into the corpus luteum, which secretes progesterone. This hormone keeps the endometrium ready for implantation. If there is no fertilisation, the corpus luteum degenerates, and the next cycle begins.
