Identify the correct sequence of pollen-pistil interaction.
(A) Pollen tube enters one of the synergids through filiform apparatus
(B) Pollen tube grows through the stigma and style and reaches the ovary
(C) Pollen tube enters the ovule through micropyle
(D) Pollen grain germinates on the stigma to produce a pollen tube
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 4
The correct answer is Option (4) → (D), (B), (C), (A)
(D) Pollen grain germinates on the stigma to produce a pollen tube — first. After a compatible pollination the pollen grain germinates on the stigma and puts out a pollen tube.
(B) Pollen tube grows through the stigma and style and reaches the ovary — second. The tube grows through the tissues of the stigma and style to the ovary.
(C) Pollen tube enters the ovule through micropyle — third. In the ovary the tube enters an ovule through its small opening, the micropyle.
(A) Pollen tube enters one of the synergids through filiform apparatus — last. Inside the ovule the tube reaches the egg apparatus. It enters one of the two synergids through the filiform apparatus, which guides it, and releases the male gametes there.

NCERT Extract:
Pollination – “… Pollen tube grows through the tissues of the stigma and style and reaches the ovary (Figure 1.12b, c). You would recall that in some plants, pollen grains are shed at two-celled condition (a vegetative cell and a generative cell). In such plants, the generative cell divides and forms the two male gametes during the growth of pollen tube in the stigma. In plants which shed pollen in the three-celled condition, pollen tubes carry the two male gametes from the beginning. Pollen tube, after reaching the ovary, enters the ovule through the micropyle and then enters one of the synergids through the filiform apparatus (Figure 1.12d, e).”
