Question:

The measures of the outer dimensions of a closed metal box are given as 15 cm × 18 cm × 8 cm. The thickness of the metal is 1.5 cm. What will be the volume of the metal required to make the box?

Options:

1680 cm3

950 cm3

1440 cm3

1260 cm3

Correct Answer:

1260 cm3

Explanation:

We know that,

Volume of the cuboid = length × breadth × height

We have,

External, Length = 15 cm

Breadth = 18 cm

Width = 8 cm

Now according to the question,

Internal, Length = 15 - 3 = 12 cm

Breadth = 18 - 3 = 15 cm

Width = 8 - 3 = 5 cm

External volume of metallic box = 15 × 18 × 8 = 2160 cm3

Internal volume of metallic box = 12 × 15 × 5 = 900

So, Volume of metal = external volume - internal volume = 2160 - 900 = 1260 cm3
