First Five-Year Plan in India (1951-56) aimed to uplift the economy and break the cycle of poverty in India. The draft of the First Five-Year Plan and then the actual Plan Document, which was released in December 1951, generated a lot of excitement in the country. Journalists, Academicians, Government and Private sector employees, Farmers, Industrialists, Politicians, etc. – discussed and debated the documents extensively. The excitement of planning reached its pinnacle when the Second Five-Year Plan was launched in 1956. Tenth Five Year Plan was from 2002 to 2007. Till now India has completed 12 Five Year Plans (12th was from 2012-17). The Government of India replaced the Planning Commission with a new institution named NITI Aayog.
