Alka, Bijoy and Chaman were partners in a firm sharing profits in the ratio of 5:4:1. The profit of the firm for the year ending on March 31, 2025 was Rs. 1,00,000. Bijoy died on June 30, 2025. Alka and Chaman decided to share future profits equally. What will be Bijoy's share of profits from the date of last balance sheet till his date of death if profits have accrued similar to the profits of previous year.
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 2
The correct answer is Option (2) → Rs. 10,000
A partner who dies during the year is entitled to his share of profit from the date of the last balance sheet to the date of his death. Since the question says this year’s profit is to be taken as similar to last year’s, the share is worked out on the previous year’s profit.
Share of profit = Previous year’s profit × Period up to death × Deceased partner’s share
Previous year’s profit = Rs. 1,00,000
Period = April 1 to June 30, 2025 = 3 months, that is 3/12
Bijoy’s share in the ratio 5 : 4 : 1 = 4/10
Bijoy’s share of profit = Rs. 1,00,000 × 3/12 × 4/10 = Rs. 10,000
The new ratio between Alka and Chaman (equal) decides how they bear this amount later; it does not change Bijoy’s share.
