Arrange the given stages involved in replication of retrovirus.
(A) New viral RNA is produced by the infected cell
(B) Viral DNA is produced by reverse transcriptase
(C) Viral DNA is incorporated into host genome
(D) Viral RNA is introduced into animal cell
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 1
The correct answer is Option (1) → (D), (B), (C), (A)
(D) Viral RNA is introduced into animal cell — first. A retrovirus, such as HIV, has RNA as its genetic material. The virus enters the host cell and releases its RNA inside it.
(B) Viral DNA is produced by reverse transcriptase — second. The enzyme reverse transcriptase copies the viral RNA into DNA. This is why these viruses are called retroviruses: the information flows backwards, from RNA to DNA.
(C) Viral DNA is incorporated into host genome — third. The viral DNA joins the DNA of the host cell. It now stays in the cell and is copied along with the host’s own genes.
(A) New viral RNA is produced by the infected cell — last. The infected cell reads the viral DNA and makes new viral RNA. New virus particles are then formed and leave the cell to infect other cells.
