Statement (I): The Prime Minister was defeated by one vote by vote of no confidence in 1996.— False. In 1996, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee did face a vote of confidence after 13 days in power. However, he was not defeated by one vote. He resigned on the floor of the House before the voting actually took place because he realized his government did not have the majority. The famous "defeat by one vote" actually happened later, in 1999, when the AIADMK withdrew support from the Vajpayee government

Statement (II): H.D. Deve Gowda was the first Prime Minister to lose confidence of the House — False, as earlier Prime Ministers had also lost majority/support in the House before him. The first Prime Minister to lose a vote of confidence in the Lok Sabha was V.P. Singh in 1990, after the BJP withdrew its support to the National Front government.
