Question:

Arrange the steps in correct order for somatic hybridization.

(A). Isolated protoplasm are fused together
(B). Isolate the protoplasts from a single cell of different plants
(C). Digest the cell wall to isolate the protoplasts
(D). Hybrid protoplasts grown to form new plants

Choose the correct answer from the options given below:

Options:

(A), (B), (C), (D)

(B), (C), (A), (D)

(B), (A), (D), (C)

(C), (B), (D), (A)

Correct Answer:

(B), (C), (A), (D)

Explanation:

The correct answer is Option (2) → (B), (C), (A), (D)

(B). Isolate the protoplasts from a single cell of different plants

(C). Digest the cell wall to isolate the protoplasts

(A). Isolated protoplasm are fused together

(D). Hybrid protoplasts grown to form new plants

Somatic hybridisation: Isolated protoplasts from two different varieties of plants – each having a desirable character – can be fused to get hybrid protoplasts, which can be further grown to form a new plant. These hybrids are called somatic hybrids while the process is called somatic hybridisation. When a protoplast of tomato is fused with that of potato, and then they are grown – to form new hybrid plants combining tomato and potato characteristics – resulting in formation of pomato.
