Which is the world’s longest highway tunnel?
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 4
The correct answer is Option (4) → Atal Tunnel
The Atal Tunnel (9.02 km), built by the Border Roads Organisation in the Pir Panjal range at about 3,000 metres, connects Manali to the Lahaul-Spiti valley all the year round and is called the world’s longest highway tunnel.
Note: The current NCERT book (2025-26) calls the Atal Tunnel ‘The World’s longest Highway tunnel’. The tunnel is in fact the longest highway tunnel in the world above 10,000 feet, which fits its height of about 3,000 metres given in the same box; longer road tunnels exist at lower heights, such as the Lærdal Tunnel in Norway (about 24.5 km). None of them is among the options, and the Channel Tunnel is a railway tunnel, so the answer is the Atal Tunnel, as per the NTA answer key.
Note: A similar question was also asked in CUET (UG) 2023 on 12-06-2023 (Slot 2) and 08-06-2023 (Slot 3).
